Gardening in Greenville

flowers

In many ways‚ we live in a plant paradise here in North Carolina. From the Outer Banks to the Great Smokies‚ our diverse climate and topography afford us tremendous opportunities for growing plants that are indigenous to many continents. We have abundant rainfall and a long growing season that favors good plant development.

It’s not necessary to have a green thumb in order to be a successful gardener. The challenge for us as gardeners is to select the proper location for our choice plants and provide the best cultural practices to keep our lawns and gardens growing. Before you put the first seed in the ground or plant that potted perennial‚ spend some time learning about your soil‚ nutrients‚ potential pests‚ and plant diseases.

Most of the soils in North Carolina are suitable for gardening. The key to success is good soil management. The first principle of soil management is to add organic matter‚ because humus is the life of the soil. Second‚ don’t work in our soils‚ particularly clay soils‚ when they are wet. Third‚ have the soil tested periodically to monitor the pH‚ and correct acidity or alkalinity conditions as needed for the plant selected.
